Lapel theme documentation

A considered clothing theme: quick view, in-card colour swatches, an editorial home and a cart that behaves. Everything on this page is generated from the theme's own settings, so the names here are the names in your editor.

Getting started

Lapel is installed from the Shopify Theme Store and configured entirely in the theme editor. No code is needed for any feature described here.

Install and publish

On the Theme Store listing choose Add theme. The theme appears under Online Store → Themes in your admin as an unpublished theme.
Choose Customize to open the theme editor. Everything below happens there.
When the store looks right, choose Publish. Your previous theme stays in the list, so you can switch back at any time.

Updates arrive through the Theme Store and never overwrite your settings, sections or content. If you have edited the theme's code, Shopify keeps your edited copy and offers the update as a new theme.

Your first hour

Logo and favicon — Theme settings → Brand. Upload an SVG or PNG; the theme sizes it for the header and the phone menu.
Menus — the header reads the menu called Main menu and the footer the menu called Footer (Online Store → Navigation). Nested items become drop-downs on desktop and an accordion on phones.
Colours and fonts — Theme settings → Colours and Lettering. Each colour scheme is a set of background, text, accent and border colours; sections pick a scheme rather than individual colours, so the store stays consistent.
Home page — every section on the demo store is in the editor's Add section list under the same category names used below. Sections come with real copy and blocks already in place; replace the words and the images.
Product, collection and cart — these templates are already composed. Open a product in the editor to arrange the product blocks (price, variant picker, buy buttons, description and so on) in the order you want.
Check on a phone — the editor's device preview shows the phone layout; every control is at least 24px and the menu opens full screen.

Theme settings apply to the whole store. Open them from the paint-brush icon in the theme editor's left sidebar.

Frequently asked questions

A section on the demo store is not in my Add section list

Every section listed above is available on every template except the checkout. Use the search field at the top of the Add section list and type the name exactly as written here.

My product images are cropped

Product cards use the aspect ratio set in Theme settings → Product tiles. Choose Natural to show every image whole, or match the ratio your photographs are shot in.

The colour swatches on product cards do not appear

Swatches are drawn for the product option named Color or Colour. Rename the option in the product's admin page, or set the swatch option name in Theme settings → Product tiles.

How do I remove the announcement bar?

Open the header group in the editor, select the announcement bar and use the eye icon to hide it, or delete it. It can be added back at any time.

Can I edit the code?

You can, but duplicate the theme first (Online Store → Themes → Actions → Duplicate) and edit the copy. Code changes are outside support, and they stop Theme Store updates from applying to that copy.

Which browsers are supported?

The current and previous versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, on desktop and mobile, plus the in-app browsers of the major social networks.

Support policy

Included with your purchase: bug fixes in the theme and answers to questions about its sections and settings, for as long as the theme is listed on the Shopify Theme Store. We reply within 2 business days, Monday to Friday, through the contact form.

Not included: customisations, app integrations, design work and changes you made to the theme code. For those, we recommend hiring a Shopify Partner. If you follow a custom-code tutorial from anywhere, duplicate your theme first; edited themes are not covered by support or by updates.

Before editing code, duplicate the theme. Work on the copy, and keep the original to switch back to.
